AS the palm oil industry embarks on the massive work to map out their supply chain from the product to the specific mill and even the plantation, the various non-governmental organisations (NGO) involved should combine their efforts to create a common platform so that the arduous and time-consuming process can be hastened, said Olam International CEO Sunny Verghese.
Olam has set out targets to progressively trace its palm oil supplies to the mill they come from by 2020. But while the group sources its palm oil from some 800 to 900 mills, an NGO it engaged has said it has the capacity to do only 12 mills a year. Industry players are also working on similar efforts to ensure traceability, Mr Verghese noted.
