[SINGAPORE] Global iron ore producer Rio Tinto has inked a memorandum of understanding with AI Singapore to develop and scale artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that address operational challenges across its supply chains.
The two-year collaboration, which is facilitated by Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), will also support the development of the Republic’s AI talent by giving emerging practitioners access to practical industry challenges and hands-on learning opportunities.
Notably, among the initiatives under the collaboration, is a project that will build on an initial AI-assisted freight invoice processing solution, said Rio Tinto in a media statement on Wednesday (Mar 18).
The mining company, which processes more than 10,000 freight invoices annually, noted that this manual and time-consuming task requires cross-checking across multiple data sources.
It added: “By combining AI Singapore’s technical expertise with Rio Tinto’s operational data and insights, the project aims to streamline validation, improve accuracy and reduce turnaround times.”
Will Millsteed, Rio Tinto Commercial’s chief financial officer, said: “Mining is often seen as a traditional industry, but the challenges we face today require modern, AI-enabled solutions.”

Working with AI Singapore thus strengthens the company’s ability to apply AI to complex supply-chain problems, he shared.
Lee Pak Sing, assistant managing director for trade and connectivity at EnterpriseSG, explained: “With more of such projects, we hope to develop Singapore as the place where commodity companies can leverage AI to transform their businesses.”
The collaboration also builds on Singapore’s standing as Rio Tinto’s global commercial and shipping hub, he pointed out.
AI Singapore’s director of AI innovation Laurence Liew noted that the partnership is part of the national AI programme’s mission to advance the Republic’s AI ecosystem.
He added: “Providing our talent with access to complex, real-world industry challenges accelerates practical learning and helps drive meaningful AI adoption in sectors such as mining, where digital transformation is emerging.”
